A Worldwide Epidemic Remains a Mystery while Hidden in Plain Sight!

A mystery epidemic, cloaked in a fog of confusion, has already doomed the lives of at least 50 million people around the world. Although the disease is widely recognized, its origin is reported as unknown and yet speculation over the cause is published almost daily in various media, and in peer-reviewed medical journals. While the media report almost daily, of newly discovered causes, the real cause mysteriously, remains disregarded. However, while remaining in plain sight, in facilities in U.S., are 5 million patients, victims of the epidemic.

Rational scientific reasoning, seems to have been replaced by dictatorial influence over researchers trying to solve this mystery. As a result, our great university and hospital research laboratories are not actively engaging in research for preventive measures but rather, are striving to develop new methods of treatment. So far, the effort to discover new effective medications to treat patients with this epidemic illness, has been an admitted failure and hopes for success are now projected 10-15 years into the future. While genomic research has uncovered a few inherited syndromes, the extremely complicated functions and interactions of genes will require years to discover the understanding necessary to use for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Researchers active in the field estimate another 10-15 years.

Migratory water fowl are the vital key to the mystery of the epidemic, since they carry the causative agent in their intestines. Since the dawn of history, man has been fascinated by the disappearance and return of birds. The migratory phenomenon is not unique to birds, it is part of the ongoing evolution of natural forces which affect all species on earth in one way or another. We already know that the transfer of disease between man and nature’s birds and animals cause many serious infectious diseases.

It has taken 29 years for the world to fully appreciate the full meaning of the great discovery of Helicobacter pylori (HP), a Class-1 Carcinogenic bacterium. This motile bacterium, when ingested from our drinking water is known to cause gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer along with several other diseases. The hidden, but in plain sight mystery, is that HP, when ingested, finds a home in the human stomach and colonizes the stomach wall, often for life, with minimal symptoms. The colonizing bacteria, who have flagellae, and are motile, result in chronic infectious inflammation in the stomach (gastritis) lining, which in turn stimulates uninfected cells, to produce amyloid.

Amyloid has been known to clinicians for many decades and has long been related to chronic infection or inflammation in the human body. Amyloid consists of many proteins. Once the amyloid cycle begins, the tiny bits enter the bloodstream and result in amyloid deposits in other organs such as liver, spleen, especially kidneys, brain and even into the walls of blood vessels.
The amyloid proteins, formed in response to chronic infection, circulate in the blood stream as tiny droplets transforming into amyloid. These droplets become the amyloid fibrils and plaques in brain tissue, the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. The accumulation of amyloid takes place over long periods of time, and often results in early Alzheimer’s, not always recognized in patients as young as 40-50 years of age. In lesser developed countries, with a high rate of HP infection, even children as early as age 2 are infected. The presence of HP infection can be detected by an antibody blood test or a breath test, or gastroscopy with biopsy. New methods of PET scanning (x-ray). spinal taps and eye scanning may also be used to find evidence of Alzheimer’s, but much more expensive, and do not provide any more information than the blood or breath tests.

The great mystery of HP infection is that it is simply due to bird droppings in our reservoirs. It is not due to kissing, hugging, dental plaque, food (rarely), or from brain cell malfunction. It is present in water that has been contaminated by droppings from migratory water fowl. Alzheimer’s disease (HP), is the result of HP infection. It is not due to aging, heredity or the myriad of causes reported so often in the media as breakthroughs. HP has been found in water supplies worldwide by University researchers from Penn State University, MIT, research facilities in other countries, as well as the EPA . Migratory water fowl carry HP endemically in their intestines. Their droppings into reservoirs and other sources of drinking water are the cause of human infection. Although HP infection is epidemic and although it is labeled as a Class-1 carcinogen, causing stomach cancer and probably other cancers, the EPA, the government agency that oversees the safety of our drinking water, has not required our drinking water to be routinely tested for HP pollution.

The key to the mystery of the epidemic is HP causing chronic infectious gastritis, usually with minimal or no symptoms, and which has eluded clinical detection by physicians. Amyloid is the body’s response to chronic infection. Before 1940, we did not have antibiotics to eradicate infection, and Amyloidosis was a commonly recognized condition with deposits of amyloid in liver, kidneys, spleen, brain and skin.

Unfortunately, we do not yet have any medication to free patients from the deadly grip of Alzheimer’s. However, we do have the knowledge to prevent Alzheimer’s by regularly testing and treating our water supplies, for HP. Individuals can elect to have either blood or breath tests to determine if HP infection exists. Regular testing for HP should start at young ages and repeated every few years. Early treatment with antibiotics can possibly halt the production of Amyloid. This approach should prevent Alzheimer’s. It is already underway in Japan, which has been suffering from a very high incidence of Gastric Cancer, a result of HP infection. We must, therefore, demand government accountability and require that EPA fulfills their mandated responsibilities and carry out regular testing and treatment of our drinking water.

“Clean water has saved more lives than all the pharmaceuticals ever produced”, was written by H.McKinnell, the former CEO of Pfizer who also believes that we need more emphasis on prevention, rather than treatment (published in his book “A Call to Action”). Alzheimer’s, Gastritis, Gastric Cancer and Peptic Ulcers can be prevented. We have many dedicated organizations. they need to clamor for action. The cause of Alzheimer’s is in plain sight, in our reservoirs, ponds and wells.

HP Contamination and its affect on Alzheimers

The International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) held in Paris June 2011, had little to report regarding treatment, cure or prevention. The lack of any real progress is disappointing to families and patients with AD.

I have followed the Helicobacter pylori (HP) discovery since 1982, when Dr. Graham, President of the ACG, read the paper from Doctors Warren and MarshaLL, that reported the original discovery and method of culture of HP. They were presented With the Noble prize in Medicine in 1985. The cause of gastritis, peptic ulcers, and cancer of the stomach was confirmed to be HP infection. My continued interest in HP has led me to conclude after many years of research, that the cause of Alzheimer’s disease has been lying in plain sight. Amyloid has been proven to be the sticky substance deposited in the brain, the cause of dementia. We have known for a very long time that chronic infection stimulates a process that creates amyloid. That fact was known long before we had antibiotics, which were developed in the early 1940’s. After the discovery of antibiotics, many chronic infections disappeared. When methods allowing study of the human genome , and special apparatus became available, the structure of the many protein fractions that make up amyloid became the focus of research.

Meanwhile, several universities, such as Penn State, MIT, and even EPA reported that a high percentage of reservoirs were contaminated with HP, but very little interest was generated.
Nevertheless, hidden in plain site, were flocks of migratory fowl living on the surface of our reservoirs and ponds and bringing with them HP. HP has been found by researchers worldwide in the feces of migratory geese. They deposit a pound a day, per goose, of HP bearing feces into our reservoirs.
Authorities have labeled HP as a Class-1 Carcinogen, causing chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and cancers of the stomach. Gastritis and ulcers are treated now with antibiotics.

Even though HP is a carcinogen, we still do not test our drinking water for HP which has been demonstrated to be susceptible to chlorine and related products.

I have spoken to authorities at the EPA who advised me that the EPA may be unable to require testing and treatment of our drinking water for a few more years. They cited lack of personnel, money and legal wrangling which has restricted the EPA from carrying out its mandated duties. (NYTimes,February 28, 2010). The consequence of the legal wrangling has interfered with EPA duties. As a result we do not have an effective policy in place to control HP infection.

Our President has recently appointed a 20 person commission to find a solution for prevention and treatment of AD in the next ten years!

The cause of AD results from a chronic infectious gastritis, almost always present with HP infection, often with very few symptoms, but which stimulates non-infected tissue in the stomach wall to produce amyloid. Upon initiation of the process which affects cells surrounding the infected tissues, amyloid begins to discharge tiny droplets of protein into the blood stream. These amyloid precursors may infiltrate into several organs, as well as the brain, where it causes fibrils and plaques of amyloid resulting in AD.
Although, we have less AD than undeveloped countries, we still have 5.4 million patients with AD, at present, and the number is steadily growing. Other countries such as China and Japan have had very high rates of peptic ulcers and stomach cancer and recently started a program to prevent HP infection. We know from many studies, that clean water has saved more lives than pharmaceuticals. We need action by public foundations and Alzheimer’s organizations to compel our agencies to fulfill their duties. Prevention, is by far, the most effective way to control the AD epidemic, and end the fear of families that AD is inevitable and is a disease of heredity and aging. It is neither. It is an infectious disease and preventable.

Alzheimer’s Disease from an Unsuspected Source

It has been known since 1906 that the Dementia of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), is due to Beta-Amyloid, a sticky substance that accumulates in the brain destroying neural function. Billions of dollars are being spent to determine the structural source of Amyloid formation, without any success. Meanwhile, 5.1 million Americans currently have the disease and AD is expected to increase with population trends. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the US and fifth leading cause of death for those age 65 and older. The National Institute of Health held a State-Of-The-Science Conference in April 2010 and issued a statement on “Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease and Cognitive Decline” at the opening session, “currently, no evidence, of even moderate scientific quality, exists to support the association of any modifiable factor “such as nutritional supplement, herbal preparations, dietary factors, prescription or non- prescription drugs, social or economic factors, medical conditions, toxins, or environmental exposures, have reduced risk of Alzheimer’s Disease”. At conclusion of this important conference, a summation was issued “that there remains important and formidable challenges in conducting research on these cognitive diseases particularly in the area of PREVENTION

Conclusions such as these, express disappointment that research, emphasizing genes,now requires another direction in order to further understand both the cause of AD as well as its prevention and treatment. Recent editorials in leading medical journals have also expressed the need for new insights. It was only in 1982 that two doctors in Australia discovered that bacteria can survive in the acid medium of the stomach and nest into the walls of the stomach causing gastritis, peptic ulcers and cancer. Doctors Warren and Marshall were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1985 for their landmark contribution to medical advancement. The bacteria found by the doctors were named Helicobacter Pylori (HP). Subsequently, blood and breathing tests were developed to identify patients with HP infection. Patients testing positive for HP may or may not have symptoms related to the chronic infection of gastritis; those with peptic ulcers have typical symptoms. Confirmation of Infectious Gastritis can be confirmed by gastroscopy with biopsy. Treatment is with antibiotics.

It is of interest that a writing in 2006,by O’Connor, Taylor and Hughes, all from the CDC, stated that “evidence now confirms that noncommunicable chronic diseases can stem from infectious agents.
Furthermore, at least 13 of 39 recently described infectious agents induce chronic syndromes. Identifying the relationships can affect health across populations, creating opportunities to reduce the impact
by preventing or treating infection. Yet the strength of causal evidence varies widely, and detecting a microbe does not prove causality. Nevertheless, infectious agents likely determine more cancers, immune mediated syndromes, neurodevelopmental disorders, and other chronic conditions, than currently appreciated. To capitalize on these opportunities, clinicians, public health practitioners, and policymakers
must recognize that many chronic diseases may indeed have infectious origins”.

It has been known for years, that patients, suffering from B-Amyloid deposits, must have an underlying condition that produces Amyloid from a chronic infection of an organ or body part or from chronic inflammatory disease. The list of diseases include Tuberculosis, Bronchiectasis, Chronic Osteomyelitis, Chronic Pyelonephritis, as well as Inflammatory Bowel disease, various kinds of Arthritis,Familial Mediterranean Fever, and several other rare conditions. The most common, and likely of most cases of AD, is unsuspected chronic Infectious Gastritis due to Helicobacter Pylori. It is a fact that patients with a positive blood or breathing test for HP are highly likely to have an associated chronic gastritis. The gastritis is due to H.Pylori which colonizes and infects the lining of the stomach forming a chronic infection, which lasts for a lifetime unless treated. It is reported that 50% of the world population have chronic H.Pylori infection. U.S. statistics reveal that 20% of our citizens have H.Pylori infection. Blood testing for the presence of HP infection should be part of every comprehensive medical examination. This is the best preventive for avoiding AD, at present, except for identifying and treating the source of H.Pylori.

The most overlooked missing link in the chain of HP infection is the question, where does HP originate? The answer is rarely mentioned in most articles. However, bacteriologists are well aware that Helicobacter Pylori is endemic in the intestines of water fowl that frequent our reservoirs. The EPA and CDC check our water supplies and find frequent contamination with HP. However, there is very little regulatory power for those agencies as far as could be determined. Various water boards along the Eastern seaboard report that it is not required for water boards to test local water supplies for HP.

Since the world-wide medical profession was not aware of the existence of HP, with its ability to cause widespread infection in the stomach, until 1982. It is still strange that many doctors have yet to incorporate HP testing in their practice, or even relate to the correlation between HP infection and chronic gastritis. This fact has also seemed to escape notice in the majority of medical writings. The fact that HP is a Class-1 Carcinogen, ( World Health Org and American Institute of Medicine) the cause of most cancers of the stomach, along with ulcers and gastritis, and exist in most water supplies, has also escaped notice. It is reasonable for Public Health authorities to institute measures for testing our water supply for HP, along with already required pathogens. A former CEO of Pfizer, stated in his recent book ” that “clean water has saved more lives than all the pharmaceuticals ever produced”. (H.Mckinnell) Clean unpolluted water should be a major goal to improve health of the public, to prevent Helicobacter Pylori infections, and Alzheimer’s Disease, as well as Cancer of the stomach. HP, a bacterium, is the most common cause of Alzheimer’s Disease by infecting the stomach wall and causing chronic infection ( Gastritis), which is where the Amyloid causing AD is generated, subsequently spreading through the body and brain. With 5,000,000 Alzheimer’s patients in the U.S.,at present, it is time for action. Significantly, most of these patients are cared for in institutions at great expense to taxpayers. It is time for preventive action!

About the Helicobacter Pylori bacterium

While doctors know that Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is caused by Beta-Amyloid deposits in the brain, few seem to remember that Amyloid has been known for decades to be a product of chronically infected tissue. More billions have already been spent in search of genes that somehow mutate or cause mutation in other genes or cells, and somehow form Beta-Amyloid. So far, none have been found. Very few articles in leading medical journals ever mention the known source of amyloid or even the chronic infections that are known to cause Amyloid formation.

Even fewer ever mention the likely chronic infection that is producing Amyloid.  Although doctors have known about peptic ulcers and gastritis for many years, it was only in 1982, that two doctors in Australia proved that a bacterium, Helicobacter Pylori (HP) was the cause. They received the Nobel prize in Medicine in 1985 for this major discovery. Their discovery led to the discovery that HP colonized the wall of the stomach causing gastritis. This infection becomes chronic and is generally overlooked, although it can be easily detected with a blood or breathing test and treated with antibiotics.  Almost no medical articles describe the source of HP.  Bacteriologists have known that HP, a Class-1 Carcinogen, is a common inhabitant of the intestines of water fowl and they are the principal source of HP pollution of water supplies throughout the world. The EPA and CDC have tested water supplies in the U.S. and found  HP in most reservoirs and wells. None of the water boards contacted along the Eastern seaboard test for HP simply because it is not required by regulatory agencies. Since 1982, it has also been established that HP is the principal cause of Cancer of the Stomach along with chronic infectious gastritis and peptic ulcers. Chronically infected tissue may cause Amyloid and researchers in Europe found that a high percentage of patients wit AD have positive tests for HP. It confirms the recent finding by Pet scans that enable confirmation of Beta-Amyloid deposits in the brain. This new approach found that in a group of about 35 patients suspected of AD, about 65% were confirmed. The remainder apparently had depressions and memory problems from other causes. The number of confirmed cases were 65%, which is the same percentage found by positive blood tests for HP in the European study.

The conclusion is that we have been overlooking  chronic infection caused by HP, which retains a lifelong presence until eradicated. Gastritis may lie dormant with or without symptoms. The results of this study exposes the need to promote prevention, The use of the simple, inexpensive blood or breathing test should become a routine part of every “comprehensive” examination, and importantly we should require that water supplies be routinely tested for HP pollution The treatment with Chlorine is known to be effective. It is necessary to understand that the future for AD  remains bleak without a new approach. Five million people in The U.S. are known to have AD at present with increasing numbers of sufferers as our population grows. The worldwide numbers are even more frightening. Worldwide, 50% of people are claimed to chronic HP infection.
